On 25 November 2005, ECTA signed the EU Road Safety Charter in the presence of Mr. S. Tostmann, Head of Unit Road Safety of the EU Commission.

ECTA commits itself to improve safety on the road by the active promotion of BBS, a one-to-one training method that improves the behaviour of the driver on the road by immediate interaction with a trainer-driver. The other commitment of ECTA is to organise feedback and consensus within its membership companies on new technologies such as ESP and reflective technology on equipment. Under EC Grant (DG Tren) ECTA has been providing assistance to Cefic in the development and promotion of Best Practices to drive continuous improvement in the safety performance of road transport operations.
The period of the EU Grant is from 1 April 2004 until 31 March 2007.
